Solid Copper Slats

Solid Copper Slats

N/A Replacing slats with ones made of copper significantly reduces maintenance, improves uptime and increases productivity. Slag build-up on copper occurs at a much slower rate and is easier to remove as compared to steel slats. Rather than using machine time and labor to cut replacement steel grates and change them out, with copper you continue to cut parts.
  • Reduced Maintenance - The slag does not stick to the copper as well as to steel. Copper slats can be cleaned at greater intervals and the build-up comes off easier.
  • Improved Uptime - Copper slats last six to eight times longer than steel. Rather than interrupting production to change a steel bed every two months copper slat beds can last over a year. Longer times between cleanings as well as shorter cleaning times lead to less down time. Spend more time cutting and making parts with copper slats.
  • Improved Productivity - Part quality is improved as there is less accumulating material under the part being cut to bounce the beam and damage the bottom side of the material. Large amount of slag between the slats will interfere with the forks that lift the finished parts on machines equipped with automation. This causes production to be stopped to remove the slag.
  • Why Slag Builds Up on Solid Copper Slats much Slower than Steel Slats - Copper is ideal as a slat material because of its high thermal conductivity and melt point. When molten kerf material or hot particles impact the slat they will cool before they give off enough heat to melt the surface of the copper and not stick.

Slag and Dross Prevention

Slag and Dross Prevention

N/A Slag build-up on slats reduces laser machine productivity. It creates an uneven work surface which affects cut accuracy and the increased surface area under the part causes more marks on the bottom of the cut part. Slag can also interfere with the automation forks which pick up finished parts. Learn about how to limit slag accumulation.

Tips and tricks on how to reduce slag build up on your slats
  • Clean slats regularly with a cleaning tool. Heavy slag build-up is hard to remove
  • Use Slat Shield Plus on new slats and recently cleaned slats to slow the build-up of slag
  • Before using your motorized slag removal tool spray slats with a light coat of WD-40 to make removal easier
Just don't let the build-up get excessive. Cleaning too much is better than too little. Slat Shield Plus is frequently used to reduce slag build-up on slats.

Benefits

Benefits

N/A Solid copper or hybrid slats are clearly superior to steel slats. Below are some of the benefits of copper.

  • Longevity - Copper slats last 2 years versus 3 months on average when steel is used.
  • Machine Up Time - Don’t waste time cutting steel slats to replace your used slats while you could be cutting parts for profit.
  • Improved Part Quality - Bottom splatter and welding of product is reduced leading to improved surface quality on the bottom of parts.
  • Improved Part Accuracy - Accumulating slag can cause an uneven work surface that allows the plate to move during cutting creating inaccuracy.
  • Less Slag - With lass slag build up the reduction of machine maintenance is realized. Automation forks less likely to collide with slag. Learn more about Slag and Dross Prevention.
  • Carbon Contamination - The use of Copper slats will reduce carbon contamination on your parts.

Why Copper?
Traditional steel grates or slats wear quickly and need to be replaced often. Slats made from copper last six to eight times longer with significantly reduced slag accumulation. We are able to produce replacement laser grating for nearly all manufacturers of laser cutting machinery.
